Testing the coffee claim:
So today I find myself in the city with an extra 45 minutes on the meter after my meeting…. Perfect, time to finally fulfil K’s vicarious coffee needs, and test a place which has been said to have the best coffee in Melbourne.
Checking where it is, I soon find that it’s in a part of town I know well, as it’s in the camping/hiking strip of Lt Bourke St, where I’ve spent many hours perusing expensive backpacks, stoves and sleeping bags. Wandering down the hill, I actually miss it, so small the place is. So, back up a few doors and there it is….
It’s a tiny place. One communal table that seats maybe 8 at most, a small bench along the wall for 3, and a bench by the kitchen for 5 at most. I order a flat white, and a take a seat at the bench by the kitchen…. Straight after me the place is berserk with take-away orders, so I sit quietly and observe the few, young, funky staff working the machine and taking orders. There’s not even a cash register here – just change in a take away cup that they rummage through when some change is required. The chairs on the ceiling is a cute novelty, but also adds to this place’s tinyness. It’s a mere 3 metres wide at most. Right by me is the coffee grinder, and etchings on the faded, stained, washed-look walls of coffee berries, a grinder, and the human oesophagus. Behind me are lockers belonging to the staff, some boxes and bags, and a very rough, utiliarian cupboard… Refined is not what you’d call this place. I take a few furtive photos of the roof and, when it arrives, a blurred shot of the beautifully done crema and coffee art…
So, to taste. Well, I don’t add sugar (which is rare for me, and I know the Mrs will now be saying “see, I told you it’s good without, now you should never have sugar again). And the overall impression is ’smooth’. There’s no bitterness at all. None. In fact, if anything, my main criticism is that it is too easy to drink. There’s very little ‘punch’ which I look for in a coffee. Still, it’s very good – and it’s finished very quickly, leaving a smooth dark brown residue of crema staining the cup beautifully…
So, is it Melbourne’s best? Well, I have to admit I’ve had better… Maybe this place has the consistency to be very good every day though. I’d happily drink here every day, but I didn’t walk away thinking “that was the best coffee I’ve ever had”… But it is a delightful place to call your ‘usual’.
So K – at least you haven’t missed out on a uniquely remarkable experience… And according to M and I, there’s a place much closer to you with possibly better coffee still
